The Portman Group has upheld a complaint against a BuzzBallz marketing stunt in London that was considered to appeal to under-18s.
The stunt included a 10ft capsule toy vending machine, which the Sazerac-owned ready-to-drink (RTD) brand stationed on London’s South Bank in late February. The machine was said to be inspired by the gachapons of Japan and contained samples, merchandise and cash. It was part of the launch of the brand’s Berry Cherry Limeade flavour.
A member of the public reported the promotional activity to UK advertising watchdog The Portman Group, writing that they were “shocked” the machine was “handing out free toys and alcohol”.
“How is handing out free alcohol from a huge arcade machine, covered in emojis and cartoon characters, socially responsible? I could see children in the area,” the complainant said.
