The Canadian province of Nova Scotia will allow local producers to cross-sell alcohol and set up secondary retail stores in the coming months.

In a bid to support local distilleries, wineries, breweries and the wider hospitality sector, Nova Scotia is relaxing several alcohol laws around retail sales and consumption.

As part of the changes, the province said it would permit Nova Scotian alcohol manufacturers to sell each other’s products in their on-site stores, and allow them to set up secondary stores that would supply Nova Scotian products and other locally produced goods.

Other relaxations include removing a requirement for manufacturers to apply for permission to participate in events and festivals, and allowing all ages to enter manufacturer tasting rooms (currently, the age restriction is 19).

The latest changes were developed in consultation with the hospitality industry, and follow a series of previous relaxations in recent years.

Nova Scotia currently has around 150 wineries, breweries, distilleries and cideries.

Nova Scotia’s Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing said the government was acting to ‘continue the growth and support local producers and businesses’.
