US President Donald Trump will impose a near-total ban on Canadian alcoholic beverage imports as the trade war between the two nations escalates. The White House issued a proclamation on Tuesday 8 September outlining a ban on the importation of certain Canadian alcohol products to the US, which will come into effect on 29 September. This includes spirits, wine, and malt beer – all of which were subject to a 50% import tariff following the breakdown of trade negotiations between the US and Canada last month.
The proclamation cited ‘continued discrimination against the commerce of the United States with respect to alcoholic beverages’ as justification for the presidential action. It further stated: “Canada is discriminating in fact against the commerce of the United States by banning the purchase, distribution, or retailing of US alcoholic beverages while not banning or similarly restricting such products from other countries…” Eight of Canada’s 10 provinces removed US alcohol from sale in early-2025 in response to president Trump imposing an initial 25% tariff on all Canadian goods.
