Unite the Union has confirmed a strike action ballot will open tomorrow (26 August) following a dispute over potential job cuts at Diageo's key grain distillery Cameronbridge in Fife, Scotland.
Around 100 Unite members will vote on whether to strike at Cameronbridge Distillery, after accusing the site's owner Diageo of failing to consult adequately over proposed changes. Of the roughly 200 people currently employed at Europe's largest grain distillery, Unite estimates that more than 70 roles are currently under review.
Diageo maintains that a proposed reduction in the number of grain distilling crews at the facility from six to five would only result in the loss of a small number of roles. A spokesperson for Diageo said the company is in consultation with colleagues on proposed changes, and is committed to engaging constructively and in good faith with the trade unions.
Cameronbridge provides grain whisky for Diageo's portfolio of blended whiskies, as well as neutral spirit for brands including Tanqueray and Gordon's Gin. This latest labour dispute follows the London-headquartered firm's announcement of plans to cut its workforce.
