In its annual report, the British-headquartered drinks firm did not address the reduced headcount. It is unclear how many of these roles were eliminated through redundancies.
Africa was the region with the biggest change in job numbers, falling by 30.2%. Diageo sold its controlling stake in East African Breweries Limited to Asahi Group Holdings in December 2025.
Europe, meanwhile, fell by only 2.5%, despite rumours about serious job losses in both Ireland and Scotland.
In its most recent financial results, for the year ended 30 June 2026, the group suffered a net sales decline of 2% and introduced a US$1 billion restructuring plan.
The report revealed the business expects 90% of the restructure to be complete by 1 September 2026.
In the report, Diageo chairman Sir John Manzoni said CEO Dave Lewis has made a “strong start” since joining the business in January. He added that parts of the restructuring plan have already been implemented, “including changes to the operating framework to make Diageo more competitive”.
He thanked staff for their “commitment and passion” through the changes.
He concluded the report by saying: “The decisions made this year have laid the foundations for the next phase of Diageo’s transformation.
“I believe we will look back on this financial year as a year in which we took important steps to set the business up for the future.
“We are clear on Diageo’s growth priorities and, as a board, we believe we have the right leadership, culture and strategy in place to deliver on them.”
Salaries and benefits
The report included details on Diageo’s director remuneration policy, such as Lewis’ base salary of £1.5 million (US$2m). Lewis’s maximum annual bonus is up to 200% of his salary, and he is also eligible for long-term share incentives worth up to 500%.
It reads: “Sir Dave’s salary was set slightly above his predecessor’s, reflecting his extensive executive experience.”
Diageo said it has adapted its remuneration policy for 2027 to put more emphasis on performance.
The median pay and benefits for staff at Diageo were estimated to be £65,879 (US$89,338).
This represented a 2.8% fall on the median reported in 2025.
The board of directors
Diageo has also announced the appointment of R Alexandra Keith as a non-executive director from 5 November. Keith most recently served as CEO for Procter & Gamble’s beauty business.
Chair Sir John Manzoni said: “I am delighted Alex has agreed to join the Diageo board. She brings recent chief executive experience in the consumer goods industry, leading and transforming branded businesses, and shaping portfolios to respond to consumer trends, including in the US.”
Other leadership changes include the appointment of John O’Keeffe as North America president and CEO; Dayalan Nayager as president of the newly merged Europe, the Middle East and Asia region; and Sujay Wasan as president of Asia Pacific.
