William Grant & Sons’ David Williamson will succeed Helen Medina in November as the chief executive officer of the World Spirits Alliance (WSA). Williamson’s WSA tenure will begin in November Medina, who was the organisation’s first CEO, took on the role in April 2024 and left the WSA at the start of the month. The WSA has hired Williamson as her replacement, who will commence as CEO in November 2026. He said: “It is an honour to lead the World Spirits Alliance, and I am excited to champion our industry’s significant contribution to communities and economies around the world. “I look forward to working with all our members to unlock new growth opportunities, encourage the responsible and sustainable enjoyment of our brands, and promote evidence-based trade, tax, and alcohol policies.” Williamson joins from Glenfiddich owner William Grant & Sons, where he has spent nearly eight years, currently as corporate affairs director. He will continue in his current position at William Grant & Sons until he transitions to the WSA in November. His wider industry experience includes 20 years at the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) and time on the boards of the International Alliance for Responsible Drinking (IARD), Spirits Europe, and the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (Discus). As CEO, he will lead the WSA’s work as a voice for the spirits industry on the global stage, advocating for the sector’s views and interests in global policy discussions. Established in 2019 and based in Geneva, the WSA comprises leading spirits companies and regional trade associations. Darya Galperina, who was recently appointed chair of the WSA board and also serves as Pernod Ricard’s international public affairs director, added: “David takes on this role at a vital moment.
The foundations of the Alliance are strong, but our sector’s expectations continue to grow. “Having worked both within leading spirits companies and industry associations, he brings a unique combination of strategic leadership, advocacy experience, and deep knowledge of the global spirits sector.
The board has full confidence in his ability to build on the Alliance’s achievements and further strengthen our global impact.”
