Excise tax on spirits in Australia has climbed to AU$110.15 (US$77.50) per litre of pure alcohol (LPA) after the country's latest hike on Monday (3 August).

Excise tax on spirits in Australia have automatically increased twice a year since the system was imposed in August 1983, with no other nation paying more outside of the Scandinavian countries.

The hikes have previously been labelled as 'completely absurd', unjustified and blocking incentives to invest in the country's distilling industry by Australia's spirits trade bodies.

According to the Spirits Council of Australia (SCA), the 79th biannual rise on Monday was one of the country's biggest outside of Covid-19. The previous duty was set at AU$107.99 (US$76) per LPA for the period between 2 February 2026 and 2 August 2026.
