The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) has reported double-digit sales growth for local products after removing American spirits from its shelves amid escalating trade tensions.
The LCBO’s total sales of Ontarian-made spirits rose by 8.9% to CA$536m (US$381.5m) in the government-controlled liquor board’s fiscal year from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026.
The figures were part of LCBO’s first Local Industry Insights Report , which revealed total sales of CA$3.07 billion (US$2.18bn) for Ontarian products across retail and wholesale channels – an increase of 20% year on year.
The LCBO has focused on increasing the availability and sales of Canadian goods after joining the majority of provinces in removing American products from its shelves in March 2025. The boycott was in response to president Donald Trump’s initial tariffs on steel and aluminium from Canada, which have since escalated to a ban on Canadian spirits imports to the US.
The new report also noted that the number of Ontarian products listed in its retail business grew by 19% across spirits, wine, beer, cider and ready-to-drink (RTD), to a total of 1,885.
The biggest increase came from RTDs, which saw listings increase by 11.7% to 78 products. The number of craft Ontarian spirits listed grew by 23% to 231.
Sales-wise, RTDs also saw the biggest growth of all Ontarian categories, rising by 25.3% to CA$826m (US$588m). It was closely followed by beer (up 24.6% to CA$103bn/US$73bn) and wine (up 20.4% to CA$627m/US$446m).
