Trade body Spirits Canada is urging its provincial governments to work with the US to prevent 50% tariffs on Canadian alcohol, warning that the industry faces cancelled orders and inventory challenges.
Yesterday (21 July), US president Donald Trump slapped a 50% tariff on certain Canadian goods in retaliation for the nation's 'unequal treatment' of US alcohol.
Janet Bannister, chair of Spirits Canada, said: 'While the industry has asked its national and provincial governments to work with their US counterparts to prevent unilateral tariffs from proceeding, Canada's spirits sector is uniquely vulnerable to this action.'
The trade body noted that 75% of Canadian spirits are exported to the US market, making the industry particularly exposed to the new tariffs. 'Our industry directly supports over 42,000 Canadian jobs and indirectly more than 148,000 jobs,' Bannister added.
Spirits Canada called for immediate diplomatic engagement between Canadian provincial officials and their US counterparts to find a resolution before the tariffs take full effect.
